Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that this film contains images and voices of people who have died.

Kanyini (2006) shares the teachings of Uncle Bob Randall, a Yankunytjatjara elder and member of the Stolen Generations. He made the film with director Melanie Hogan.

Uncle Bob explains Kanyini, the Aboriginal principle of connectedness through caring and responsibility. It rests on four connections: belief (Tjukurrpa), land (Ngura), family (Walytja) and spirit (Kurunpa). He shares how these were broken for his generation, when children were taken from their families.

Key themes

  • Connectedness through caring and responsibility
  • Connection to land and nature as a source of wellbeing
  • Family, community and belonging
  • The lasting impact of the Stolen Generations

We share this film because it shows how much our wellbeing depends on connection: with each other, with the land and with spirit.
