What the research says
Start with better sleep habits. If poor sleep lasts for months, a doctor may offer CBT for insomnia, a talking therapy with the best evidence. NHS, 2024 · NICE, 2022
- Relaxation and mindfulness: can help you wind down, but studies on insomnia are small or mixed. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2024
- Hypnotherapy: about half of the studies found better sleep. Results vary. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2024
- Yoga: may improve how well people sleep, especially older adults. Some evidence it may help · NCCIH, 2024
- Listening to music: people felt they slept better in 13 studies. Sound baths have not been studied. Some evidence it may help · Cochrane, 2022
- Massage: not studied well for sleep. No good evidence yet · NCCIH, 2024
- Reiki: no reliable studies show it helps sleep or any health problem. Some people find it restful. No good evidence yet · NCCIH, 2018
- Herbal remedies: valerian and chamomile have not been shown to help insomnia, and some herbs interact with medicines. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2024

When to talk to a doctor
If poor sleep goes on for weeks, affects your day, or you feel very low, talk to your doctor. Loud snoring or gasping for breath at night is also a reason to see a doctor. In the UK, melatonin needs a prescription.
In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
