Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)
Dance/Movement therapy (DMT) in USA/Australia, or Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) in the UK, is the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance to support mental, emotional, and physical functions of the body. It is a modality of creative arts therapies which explores the connection between movement and emotion. The theory of DMT is based upon the belief that the body, mind and emotions interact as an holistic whole. Both conscious and unconscious movement of a person affects and reflects the individual’s personality and current state of being. In DMT, the therapist-client relationship is partly based on non-verbal cues such as body language. Movement is thought to have a symbolic function so can help in understanding the self. Movement improvisation allows you to experiment with new ways of being and DMT provides a channel through which you can consciously come to understand negative experiences through non-verbal support by the therapist. Through the unity of mind, body and spirit, DMT can provide an opportunity to integrate and embody emotions and experiences and so lead to a sense of wholeness.
