Jivamukti Yoga
The Jivamukti Yoga method was created by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984. Jivamukti is a physical, ethical, and spiritual practice, combining vigorous yoga with focussed integration of five central principles: Shastra (spiritual writings), Bhakti (devotion), Ahimsa (non-violence and non-harming), Nada (music), and Dhyana (meditation). The yoga itself is based on the style of Vinyasa, another form of usually quite vigorous yoga practice. Teachers are encouraged to make the principles and philosophy of Jivamukti easier to relate to by drawing on examples from modern life and contemporary music. Classes can also be light-hearted and fun. Jivamukti philosophy also has a focus on animal rights, veganism as a way of eating, environmentalism and supporting positive social change.
