Hands-on therapy may ease low back pain a little, best alongside exercise. Studies of osteopathy itself give mixed results.

What a session is

A registered osteopath asks about your health and checks how you move, then uses hands-on techniques such as massage, stretching and moving your joints, plus exercise advice. In the UK, osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

What the research says

  • Low back pain: Hands-on therapy may ease low back pain a little; NICE suggests it only alongside exercise. Studies of osteopathy itself give mixed results. Limited evidence · NICE, 2016 · NHS, 2026 · Cochrane, 2026
  • Neck pain: Studies of hands-on joint techniques for neck pain found small benefits at most, and none were high quality. Limited evidence · Cochrane, 2015
  • Headaches: Studies of spinal manipulation, which osteopaths may use, give mixed results for headaches. Early studies found fewer neck-related headaches. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2021 · NCCIH, 2022
  • Health problems beyond muscles and joints: Very few good studies, and none found a clear benefit for problems beyond muscles and joints. No good evidence yet · NCCIH, 2022
  • Sleep, stress, worry, low mood, menopause and grief: Not studied in the sources we use. No good evidence yet

Is it safe?

Feeling sore or stiff for a day or so is common, and neck manipulation has very rarely been linked to a stroke. Check with your doctor first if you take blood thinners, have very weak bones or joints, or a nerve condition. You can check an osteopath on the GOsC register.
