Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems is an integrative form of psychotherapy that incorporates systemic thinking (see Systemic Therapy) with a perspective that the mind is comprised of sub-personalities each with different characteristics. It was developed by Richard Schwartz and is used in therapeutic work with individuals, couples and families. Internal family systems therapy recognises that each of us has a true ‘Self’ which is inherently compassionate and curious about others and the different parts of our systems. An IFS therapist will facilitate the client’s ‘Self’ in healing each internal part so that burdensome feelings and beliefs may be released.
