Many studies suggest it may help with everyday problems, but most are weak. Evidence for low mood and anxiety is limited.

What a session is

A short, goal-focused talking therapy. Rather than going over the past, you and the therapist look at what you want instead, and the strengths and small steps to get there.

What the research says

  • Coping with everyday problems: A 2024 review of 72 studies found benefits for many everyday problems. Effects were much smaller against usual care, and some studies were not randomised. Limited evidence · Clinical Psychology Review, 2024
  • Low mood: A review of therapy trials in GP settings reported clear benefits only for CBT and problem-solving therapy, not solution-focused therapy. More research is needed. Limited evidence · Journal of Affective Disorders, 2019 · Clinical Psychology Review, 2024
  • Worry and anxiety: The same review found clear benefits for anxiety only with CBT and problem-solving therapy. UK guidance recommends CBT or applied relaxation for lasting anxiety. Limited evidence · Journal of Affective Disorders, 2019 · NICE, 2020
  • Stress, sleep, pain, menopause and grief: Not studied for these in the sources we use. The NHS says talking therapies may help if stress affects your life. No good evidence yet · NHS, 2026

More on each need: Lift your mood · Feel calmer · Handle stress better
