Spinal manipulation may ease low back pain a little, about as much as other care. Evidence for neck pain and headaches is limited.
What a session is
A registered chiropractor asks about your health and examines you, then uses hands-on techniques, often quick, controlled pushes to the joints of your spine (spinal manipulation), plus stretches and exercise advice. In the UK, chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council.
What the research says
- Low back pain: Spinal manipulation may ease low back pain a little, about as much as other recommended care. NICE suggests it only alongside exercise. Some evidence it may help · NCCIH, 2022 · Cochrane, 2026 · NICE, 2016
- Neck pain: Studies suggest manipulation may ease neck pain a little, but they are small and inconsistent, and none were high quality. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2022 · Cochrane, 2015
- Headaches: Results are mixed. Early reviews found fewer neck-related headaches and migraine days, but more and better research is needed. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2021 · NCCIH, 2022
- Health problems beyond muscles and joints: Very few good studies, and none found a clear benefit for problems beyond muscles and joints. No good evidence yet · NCCIH, 2022
- Sleep, stress, worry, low mood, menopause and grief: Not studied in the sources we use. No good evidence yet
More on each need: A relaxed body · Sleep better
Is it safe?
Mild soreness, stiffness or a headache is common and usually passes within a day; neck manipulation has very rarely been linked to a stroke. Check with your doctor first if you take blood thinners, have very weak bones or joints, or a nerve condition. You can check a chiropractor on the GCC register. NCCIH, 2022 · Cochrane, 2015 · NHS, 2026
Sessions on Sissoo complement medical care and never replace it. Please don’t stop or change any treatment without talking to your doctor.
