CBT has good evidence for low mood and depression. The NHS lists it among the talking therapies it offers for depression. Spanish guidance names it as a first-choice talking therapy for moderate to severe depression. But it does not help everyone.

What a session is

CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is a talking therapy where a trained therapist helps you change unhelpful thoughts and habits. You usually have 5 to 15 sessions and practise skills between them.

What the research says

We have not yet rated CBT for low mood after a loss, or for stopping low mood coming back. We will add these when we have checked the evidence.
