Ayurveda: what the research says

Ayurveda has few good studies. Ashwagandha, one of its herbs, may ease stress and help sleep a little, but some products carry real risks.

What a session is

Ayurveda is a traditional health system from India. A practitioner looks at your diet, daily routine and lifestyle, and may suggest plant-based products and exercise.

What the research says

  • Stress: Some preparations of ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic herb, may ease stress, a US health body says. Studies were small and used different products. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2023
  • Sleep: Some ashwagandha preparations may help sleep, but studies were small. Ayurvedic programmes as a whole have not been studied for sleep. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2023 · NCCIH, 2019
  • Worry and anxiety: Not studied well. For ashwagandha, the evidence on anxiety is unclear. No good evidence yet · NCCIH, 2023
  • Low mood, back and neck pain, menopause and grief: There is little good research on Ayurveda for these. Most trials of Ayurvedic approaches are small or poorly designed. No good evidence yet · NCCIH, 2019 · NCCIH, 2023

More on each need: Handle stress better · Sleep better · Feel calmer

Is it safe?

Some Ayurvedic products have contained lead, mercury or arsenic, so avoid unlicensed products bought online; in the UK, look for the THR mark. The NHS advises against herbal medicines if you're expecting a baby, breastfeeding, have liver or kidney problems, or take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about everything you take, and don't stop prescribed medicine. NCCIH, 2019 · NHS, 2026 · NCCIH, 2023
