Most yoga studies used hatha-style classes. They suggest it may ease stress and back pain a little and help sleep quality.

What a session is

A yoga class with physical postures, breathing and relaxation, usually at a steady, gentle pace. Hatha is a common starting point for beginners.

What the research says

  • Back, neck and muscle tension: Studies of yoga in general found small benefits for long-term low back pain, about the same as other exercise. Neck pain studies are fewer. Some evidence it may help · Cochrane, 2022 · NICE, 2016 · American College of Physicians, 2017
  • Stress and worry: Many, though not all, studies of yoga in general found people felt less stressed or anxious. For anxiety disorders, evidence is weak. Some evidence it may help · NCCIH, 2023 · NCCIH, 2024 · NHS, 2026
  • Sleep: Studies of yoga in general found better sleep quality, mainly in women and older adults. Effects on long-lasting sleep problems are unclear. Some evidence it may help · NCCIH, 2024 · NCCIH, 2023
  • Low mood: Studies of yoga in general found it may lift low mood a little, mostly alongside other care. If low mood lasts, see a doctor. Some evidence it may help · NCCIH, 2023 · Cochrane, 2026
  • Menopause: Studies of yoga in general found it may ease some menopause symptoms, about as much as other exercise. Experts disagree about hot flushes. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2023 · NHS, 2026 · The Menopause Society, 2023
  • Grief: Not studied for grief itself. Yoga has some evidence for stress and low mood, which often come with grief. Limited evidence · NCCIH, 2023

More on each need: A relaxed body · Handle stress better · Feel calmer · Sleep better · Lift your mood · Menopause wellbeing · Grief and loss

Is it safe?

Yoga is generally safe for healthy people with a qualified teacher; sprains and strains are the most common injuries. Older adults, people with a health condition and anyone expecting a baby should check with their doctor and tell the teacher. Learning alone, without a teacher, carries more risk. NCCIH, 2023 · AETS-ISCIII (Spanish Ministry of Health, RedETS), 2021
