No reliable studies show Theta Healing helps any health problem. A small study did not find the 'theta' brain state it is named after.

What a session is

Theta Healing is a meditation-based method created by Vianna Stibal. The practitioner guides you through a meditation, often with muscle testing, to look for beliefs you may want to change; practitioners believe this works through a 'theta' brain-wave state.

What the research says

  • Worry, stress and low mood: No reliable studies show it helps. A small brain-wave study found the 'theta' state did not increase during sessions. No good evidence yet · Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2016
  • Changing beliefs and emotional patterns: Not studied in reliable research. Some people value the time to reflect, but no studies have measured this. No good evidence yet
  • Back, neck and muscle tension, sleep, menopause and grief: Not studied in the sources we use. Small trials are registered but have not published results. No good evidence yet

More on each need: Feel calmer · Handle stress better · Lift your mood · A relaxed body · Sleep better · Menopause wellbeing · Grief and loss

Is it safe?

No study has checked its safety, though similar energy methods such as Reiki have not been shown to cause harm. Use it alongside, never instead of, care from your doctor, and don't let it delay seeing one. NCCIH, 2018

Sessions on Sissoo complement medical care and never replace it. Please don’t stop or change any treatment without talking to your doctor. If you feel very low or think about ending your life, call your local emergency number now.

Checked 22 October 2026. Next check by April 2027. How we rate the evidence.
